The long-term management of thyrotoxicosis with antithyroid drugs

Boregowda Kusuma , Stephens Jeffrey , Price David

Little has been published on the long-term management of thyrotoxicosis with antithyroid drugs (ATDs). We analysed 376 thyrotoxic subjects on the Morriston database since 2002. 170 had Graves’ disease, 181 toxic multinodular goitre (TMNG); in 25 the diagnosis was not recorded. When euthyroid subjects were requested to have annual thyroid function testing 42 (11%) had died. 111(30%) did not have TFT’s done in last two years. 135 graves’s cases were given ATDs whi...

Shaikh Ayesha , Saraf Asish , Udiawar Maneesh , Boregowda Kusuma , Price David

Background: Recent NICE guidance recommends radioactive iodine as the first line treatment for relapsed thyrotoxicosis as it reportedly produces better control than long-term anti-thyroid drugs (ATDs).However, almost all studies of long-term ATDs relapse occurs after discontinuation of a medication. We present a retrospective analysis of efficacy of ATDs. Methods: Data of all patients with hyperthyroidism, attending Endocrinology clinic at Morriston Hosp...

Ruslan Nur Aliya Mohd , Boregowda Kusuma , Price David

Section 1: Case history: A 52 years old gentleman initially presented with visual field defect and headache due to a large multi-lobulated pituitary adenoma and underwent an endoscopic transsphenoidal sub-total resection in March 2018. Histology revealed a non-functioning adenoma with mitotic index Ki-67 of 3%–5%. His visual field defects resolved post-operatively and he was monitored with serial imaging. Shaikh Ayesha , Saraf Asish , Udiawar Maneesh , Egan Richard , Price David , Boregowda Kusuma

Introduction: Risk of thyroid cancer is 17-32% in cold nodules and <1 % in hot nodules. Hot nodules are usually associated with Thyrotoxicosis. Patients with thyroid carcinoma are usually euthyroid but may be associated with hypothyroidism. We report 3 patients with hyperthyroidism and associated thyroid carcinoma.Case 1: A 17 years old lady presented with a lump in the neck and examination revealed prominent nodule on the right. Young women with polycystic ovary syndrome have increased concentrations of circulating annexin V-positive microparticles derived predominantly from platelets

Willis Gareth , Connolly Katherine , Ladell Kristin , Miners Kelly , Price David , Guschina Irina , Clayton Aled , James Philip , Rees Aled

Background: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may have increased cardiovascular (CV) risk but the mechanisms are unclear. Microparticles (MP), small circulating vesicles released from platelets, monocytes and endothelial cells, are elevated in patients with CV disease, and may increase CV risk through altered cell content and/or increased surface exposure of procoagulant phosphatidylserine (PS).Aims: To compare MP characteristics between women ...
